Men's Health

Staying Healthy

Whatever happened to the red-blooded male, devouring hunks of juicy steak and holding his liquor? The truth is, he’s probably suffering from heart disease or has gone to an early grave!

These days, men are becoming much more aware of the steps they need to take to live long, healthy and energetic lives. Not long ago, little was reported in the media about prostate problem, impotence or other conditions affecting men. To complicate the picture, many men are stubborn about admitting that they have a health problem. Whether we now have more sophisticated diagnostic tools-or whether men are being more open about discussing their health - we are learning more about the problems affecting men. Every day more and more males are realizing that prevention is the key to a longer life and medicine therapies are worth investigating. Today’s men not only want to live longer, but live younger and healthier. Below are four common problems affecting men and some-health strategies to prevent and treat them.

PROSTATE

Potential Problem

Good - Health Strategy

A large number of men suffer from prostate problems at some point during their lives. Although men as young as twenty can experience such problems, disorders are more common after age 35, and the percentage increases with age. By age 50, twenty percent of all men have enlarged prostate; by 70, it’s fifty percent; and by 80, over eighty percent. The prostate gland is unique to men. About the size of a grain of wheat at birth, it is unlike most glands and continues to grow with age. Its primary function is thought to be aiding the semen to move through the urethra during ejaculation, plus supplying some of the seminal fluid. It also produces enzymes and perhaps some hormones. The most common disorder of the prostate is prostatic enlargement. This is a direct result of the continued growth of the prostate gland. Over the age of forty, the prostate begins to grow inexorably. It can grow so large that it obstructs the flow of urine. This constriction of the urethra results in various urinary problems. In fact, increased urge urination is generally the first sign of an enlarged prostate gland. This increased urge is not accompanied by a satisfying evacuation. Other symptoms include painful urination, weak stream, post-urinary dribbling, and an undesired pause before urination begins. The enlarged prostate is directly correlated to a decline in testosterone production. Just as women’s estrogen hormone begins to fall off around the age of 40, men begin to decrease their production of testosterone. This decrease is caused by the increase of testosterone reductase, an enzyme. This culprit interacts with testosterone resulting in the presence of a prostate metabolite called dihydrotestosterone. Although testosterone does good things for men, the dihydro-form effects both male pattern baldness and prostatic enlargement.

The following are nutrients that target health concerns for prostate. Saw Palmetto a tiny native American fruit that contains a minute amount of essential oils that have a profound effects on testosterone metabolism. Not only does the saw palmetto lipid extract inhibits the action of the enzyme that causes all the trouble, it also inhibits other negative male hormone actions through to be additional factors in prostate enlargement. Essential Fatty Acids can be essential for prostate health. Before sex hormones can be synthesized, essential fatty acids, vitamin E, and several of the B vitamins must be present. Animals deprived of essential fatty acids become infertile. This process is especially rapid in males. Although three fatty acids are considered essential, the healthy body can synthesize both linolenic and arachidonic from linoleic. The best sources of linoleic are safflower and sunflower, while the best source of linolenic is flax seed oil. Minerals which are important to men’s health are zinc, magnesium, potassium, and chromium. Zinc is the men’s mineral. It is probably the most important nutrient to the overall health of the male reproductive system. It can increase sperm counts and normalize testosterone production in zinc deficient men. Their are many Health Products on the market today that contains all the essential nutrient for Healthy a Prostate.

 COLORECTAL CANCER

Potential Problem

Good - Health Strategy

According to Michio Kushi in the cancer prevention diet (St. Martin’s Press, 1993), cancer of the large intestine, including the colon and rectum-also known as bowel cancer, cancer of the gut and colorectal cancer-is one of the deadliest cancer. Cancer of the large intestine is generally preceded by spastic colon, colitis, or diverticlosis and growth of polyps. When the colon can no longer protect itself from abnormal growths in the colon, full-fledged obstructions in the form of cancerous tumors results..

Number of studies shows that calcium and vitamin D offer protection against colorectal cancer. The mineral is thought to blind to bile and fatty acids in the colon, thus inhibiting their irritating effect on epithelial cells, which may multiply in an attempt to protect themselves. Vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium. The lack of B vitamins and folic-acid has also been link with colon cancer. Studies have shown, those who consumed the most developed colon cancer one-third less frequently than those who consumed the least of the vitamin B, D , folic acid and calcium.

HEART DISEASE

 IMPOTENCE

Potential Problem

Good - Health Strategy

Impotence, which affects men of all ages from time to time, is a permanent or temporary inability to maintain a rigid erection. A satisfying sex life requires a healthy body. Impotence or the desire for sex can adversely affected by numerous things including drugs, alcohol, cigarette smoking, caffeine, stress, over work, common medicines such as certain tranquilized and anthypertensives. Hormone levels decrease with age, so does sexual functions, strength, endurance, and muscle tone.

The content of sperm includes protein, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin B, E, C and inositol. A deficiency in any of these nutrients can affect your sex life. Muira puama is an herb that has long been used to increase potency in males. This herb has also been uses as a aid for prostate functions. A proper functioning prostate gland is essential in a man’s sexual performance. Ginseng is favorite for sustaining energy, anti-stress and overall health which is all required for proper sexual functions. Orchid is an glandular substance derived from testicle tissue. The test main role are in the production of testosterone. Yohimbe bark has long been known to the native of Africa as an effective rejuvenate. The Africa natives had use the yohimbe bark for century, in increasing sexually functions.

According to Robert Garrison Jr., M.A., R.Ph., and Elizabeth Somer, M.A.,R.D., in their book The Nutrition Desk Reference, Men have one of the highest heart-disease rates. In fact, cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attack, stroke, atherosclerosis and congestive heart failure, is the leading cause of death for men. The primary risk factors include high blood pressure, cigarette smoking and high cholesterol. Some of the secondary risk factors include: obesity, diabetes, stress, lack of cardiovascular exercise, family history of heart or blood-vessel disease, stress-prone personality type and increasing age.

Magnesium deficiency, which has been reported in 20 to 80 percent of the population, is associated with angina and other cardiovascular complaints, reports M.A. Brodsky, of the University of California at Irvine in the Journal of American College of Nutrition. In fact, magnesium has been used as an anti-arrhythmic agent since 1943. Many Natural Products can  helps promote cardiovascular health. The consumption of beta carotene not only help fight free radical and help improves for eye sight - but may reduce the risk of myocardial infarction. At Harvard University, researchers tracked 39,000 male health professionals for four years. Those whose includes vitamin E in their diets, were 37 percent less likely to develop heart disease than those who didn’t . Coenzyme Q10 deficiency is common in individual with heart disease, according to Michael T. Murray, N.D., and Joseph E. Pizzorno, N.D., in the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine. Heart-tissue biopsies in patients with various heart diseases showed a CoQ10 deficiency in 50 to 75 percent of cases. The heart, one of the most metabolically active tissues in the body, may be unusually susceptible to the effects of CoQ10 deficiency. Accordingly, CoQ10 has shown great promise in the treatment of heart disease.
